FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (0-4) faced another tough test today with a doubleheader against the Methodist Monarchs (2-2, 0-0 USA South). Sweet Briar found success at the plate, scoring a total of three runs through both games, but ultimately fell to the Monarchs by scores of 11-2 and 9-1.
Game One
The Vixens took the early 1-0 lead after the first inning thanks to an RBI single to right field by first-year
Melanie Rees (Partlow, Va.). Fellow first-year
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) was able to score off of the play.
The Monarchs would answer with nine runs of their own in the following three innings.
Rees would add to Sweet Briar's total with a single to center field sending first-year
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) across home plate.
Two more runs by the home team in the fifth would conclude the game at 11-2.
At the plate, the Vixens totaled six hits and two RBIs.
Smith pitched the entirety of the game, walking only one batter and forcing five fly outs and seven ground outs while facing 30 batters.
Game Two
The Monarchs picked up where they left off in game one, scoring a total of eight runs through the first three innings.
The lone scoring play for the Vixens came in the fourth when first-year
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) singled to right field sending fellow first-year
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) home.
With one more run scored by Methodist in the fifth, the game ended with a score of 9-1.
At the plate, the Vixens totaled one RBI and two hits courtesy of Williams.
First-years
Madyson Brown (Hurt, Va.) and
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) split pitching duties in game two with Brown getting the start. She faced 21 batters, walked two, recorded one strike out and forced two flyouts and five ground outs.
O'Quinn also recorded one strikeout while forcing one fly out and five ground outs over nine batters faced.
Highlights
- At least one Vixens pitcher has not walked a single batter during their time at the mound in every game so far this season.
- Both Smith and Rees went three for two in game one while Williams went two for two during game two.

The Vixens will play in their home opener, the first game to be played at the Softball Field since April 11, 2017, on Sunday, Feb. 26 versus William Peace.
