Softball Comes Up Short Against William Peace in Home Opener

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (0-4) came up short in today's doubleheader against the William Peace Pacers (2-2, 0-0 USA South) to open up play at home. The Vixens fell in the first game 9-2, but bounced back to score more runs in its 8-3 loss in the second game.
 
Game One
Sweet Briar took the early 1-0 lead in the first thanks to first-year Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.). Her RBI double brought home fellow first-year Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) for the one run lead.
 
The Pacers would answer with three runs of their own in third to take the 3-1 lead. Following that, it was all action from the visiting team with one additional run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in seventh.
 
The Vixens would close out the game with an RBI from first-year Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) sending Hudson across home plate for the 9-2 conclusion of game one.
 
At the mound, first-year Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) faced 22 batters and forced four flyouts and six groundouts. Coming into the game in relief, first-year Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) faced 17 batters and forced three flyouts and three groundouts.
 
Hudson led the team with two hits while Smith had one.
 
Game Two
After a scoreless first inning, William Peace started heating up by scoring six runs in the second inning.
 
Despite being down, Sweet Briar would tally the next three runs in the game with a double from Hudson sending Tew home in the third and a triple from first-year Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) allowing Williams to cross home in the fourth.
 
Jamerson would go on to steal home bringing the score to 6-3 entering the fifth. The Pacers would answer with two more runs in the sixth while a scoreless seventh inning would bring the game to its 8-3 close.
 
First-year Brooke Patrick (Chesapeake, Va.) started the game for the Vixens and faced 13 batters. Patrick would force three flyouts and one groundout during her 1.2 innings pitched.
 
Coming into the game of the bench, first-year Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) would face 21 batters, record zero walks and force 10 flyouts and four groundouts.
 
Both Tew and Hudson recorded two to lead the team.
 
Highlights
  • Smith leads the team with a .400 batting average.
  • Tew now leads the team with three runs scored after scoring two today.

The Vixens will take on Southern Virginia at home on Wednesday, March 1 before heading to the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. from March 5
