Softball Bested by Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (7-11) was bested by the Ferrum Panthers (5-3, 0-0 ODAC) in today's doubleheader by scores of 9-0 and 9-1.
 
Game One
The Vixens were shut out by the Panthers in game one, with the home team scoring runs in the second (three) and third (six) innings for the 9-0 score.
 
First-year Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) started the first three innings at the mound and faced a total of 21 batters. Pisenti recorded four flyouts and five ground outs. Fellow first-year Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) saw action in the fourth inning with four batters and forced three ground outs.
 
At the plate, first-year Abby Wilkerson (Appomattox, Va.) recorded the lone hit for Sweet Briar.
 
Game Two
Despite going out to an early 1-0 lead after the first, Sweet Briar managed to keep Ferrum off the board for the following three innings. The Panthers broke managed to break through in the fifth though, tallying six runs for the 7-0 lead.
 
A fielder's choice play in the sixth on Wilkerson's at-bat would allow first-year Jasmine Mooney (St. Johnsburg, Vt.) to score the Vixens' lone run of the game.
 
However, Ferrum would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to its 9-1 conclusion.
 
At the mound, first-year Brooke Patrick (Chesapeake, Va.) would see 21 batters through four innings. Patrick forced eight flyouts and four groundouts. Fellow first-year Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) saw 12 batters during her time as pitcher and forced two flyouts and a groundout.
 
Wilkerson earned the only RBI of the game while first-year Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) led the team with three hits. First-year Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) recorded two hits while fellow first-year Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) had one.
 
Highlights
  • Tew was a perfect three-for-three at the plate in game two.
  • Mooney recorded the first run scored of her career in game two.

The Vixens will travel to Bridgewater on Saturday, March 18 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
