LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (7-15) mounted a comeback against the Randolph College WildCats (11-7, 0-0 ODAC) after falling 8-0 in game one to force a ninth inning in game two before falling 6-5.
Game One
After a scoreless first inning, the WildCats found their footing at the plate in the bottom of the second to score a run and get on the board.
A four-run third inning followed by two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for the home team would bring the game to an early 8-0 close.
First-year
Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) spent the entire game at the mound and faced a total of 31 batters. Pisenti struck out four and forced seven flyouts and four groundouts.
At the plate, first-year
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) earned the lone two hits for the Vixens, including a double in the first inning.
Game Two
Sweet Briar would make the victory a lot tougher for Randolph in the second game of the day.
Both teams would earn a run in the first inning while a single from first-year
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) sent fellow first-year
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) home to the 2-1 lead after the third.
With two runs scored by the WildCats in the fifth inning for the 5-2 lead, and a scoreless sixth inning, the game seemed sure to draw to a close after the seventh.
However, Hudson would step up big for the Vixens, hitting her fourth home run of the season to allow first-years
Melanie Rees (Partlow, Va.) and
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) to tie the game up.
A fly out to centerfielder
Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) by Randolph with runners on second and third sent the game to extra innings.
The WildCats would score on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth to earn the 6-5 victory.
At the mound, first-year
Brooke Patrick (Chesapeake, Va.) faced 36 batters, earned two strikeouts and forced eight flyouts and seven groundouts.
Hudson led the team with 3 RBIs while Tew recorded two. Both first-year
