Softball Takes One from Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (8-16) took game one against the Brevard College Tornados (6-14, 2-6 USA South), 4-1, before falling in the second game by a score of 8-0.
 
Game One
The Vixens opened up the scoring in game one off a sacrifice RBI from first-year Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) that sending fellow first-year Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) home.
 
Sweet Briar increased its lead to two in the top of the second when first-year Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) tripled to allow first-year Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) to score.
 
Despite Brevard coming with one after the third inning, first-year Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) pushed the Vixens to victory with a double to left field which saw O'Quinn and Williams cross home plate for the 4-0 victory.
 
First-year Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) picked up the win at the mound after pitched all seven innings. Pisenti recorded five strikeouts through 30 batters faced and forced 11 flyouts and five groundouts.
 
Both Williams and Kuleba went two-for-three at the plate, while Kuleba recorded two RBIs and Jamerson and O'Quinn recorded one each.
 
Williams and Kuleba also led the team with two hits.
 
Game Two
The home team mounted a comeback in the second game to cut things after five innings.
 
Brevard tallied two runs in the first and five in the second for the early 7-0 lead. An additional run by the Tornados in the fourth brought the game to its 8-0 close.
 
First-year Brooke Patrick (Chesapeake, Va.) got the start in game two for Sweet Briar. Patrick faced 13 batters and forced two flyouts and three groundouts.
 
After earning the win in game one, Pisenti came into game two in relief. After facing a total of 10 batters, Pisenti left the field with no walks, three strikeouts, three flyouts and one groundout.
 
Hudson, first-year Abby Wilkerson (Appomattox, Va.) and Williams all recorded one hit.
 
Highlights
  • With O'Quinn's triple today, the Vixens have now recorded eight triples so far this season to put them at 32nd in the nation.
  • Pisenti's ERA of 1.00 in the first game marks her lowest single-game ERA of the season.

The Vixens will return home to take on Marymount on Wednesday, April 5.
