Tennis Drops Matches to Nationally Ranked Case Western Reserve, Denison

MAYFIELD, Ohio – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (11-5, 5-0 ODAC) dropped a pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents today in Ohio, falling to No. 12 Case Western Reserve 9-0 and No. 29 Denison 7-2.
 
The Case Western Reserve Spartans got off to a hot start, earning all three doubles points to go ahead early on.
 
In singles play, both senior Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and junior Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) took the home team to three sets.
 
Wandling, playing at the No. 2 flight, came back in from a 6-2 first set loss to earn the 6-1 second set victory over No. 39 Lily McCloskey. Wandling fell in the hard-fought third set tiebreak, 10-8.
 
I. Guilarte also came back from a first set loss, 6-1 to Shreya Ramani at the No. 6 position, to take the second set by a score of 7-6(7-3). I. Guilarte dropped the tiebreak by a score of 10-5.
 
Sweet Briar was back at it again shortly after against the No. 29 Denison Big Red in the afternoon.
 
The Vixens earned one doubles victory in their second match of the day thanks to an 8-4 win by Andrade/Patino over Brual/Lopez at the No. 2 flight.
 
The lone singles victory came at the hands of I. Guilarte who defeated Sofia Zafiropulos at the No. 6 spot, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Both seniors Sofia Andrade (Latacunga, Ecuador) and Nikhita Simhambhatla (Hyderabad, Telangana, India) made their opponents work for their victories over three sets.
 
Andrade fell to Peyton Oda at the No. 4 flight by scores of 6-3, 7-5, 2-6 while Simhambhatla was bested by Caroline Lopez at the No. 5 slot by scores of 6-0. 4-6, 4-6.
 
Highlights
  • I. Guilarte has now won two matches against national-ranked teams and taken an additional two to three sets.
  • Wandling played a hard-fought match against the first nationally-ranked opponent she's faced in her career.

The Vixens will take on No. 30 Kenyon tomorrow at 8:45 a.m.
