SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (9-19) was bested by the Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels (13-12-1, 5-5 USA South)in today's doubleheader by scores of 6-0 and 7-0.
Game One
The Fighting Squirrels found their bats early on in the game, scoring four runs through the first three innings.
A scoreless fourth, fifth and sixth innings would give way to a two-run outing for the visiting team to give them the 6-0 victory in game one.
At the plate, both first-years
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) and
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) went two-for-three.
First-year
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) got the start for the Vixens, facing 24 batters through five innings and recording no walks, three strikeouts, three flyouts and seven groundouts. Fellow first-year
Brooke Patrick (Chesapeake, Va.) came into the game I relief and faced a total of ten batters in the final two innings.
Patrick gave up zero walks, struck out one and forced two flyouts and three groundouts.
Game Two
After a scoreless first two innings, Mary Baldwin picked up where it left off in game one with six runs in the top of the third.
An additional run by the Fighting Squirrels in the fifth and a great defensive effort to keep them off the board any further by Sweet Briar ended the game with a score of 7-0.
First-year
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) earned a double in the first inning, while fellow first-year
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) went one-for-one with a single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
First-year
Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) got the start in game two and faced 14 batters. She forced four flyouts and three groundouts during her 2.1 innings pitched.
O'Quinn came into the game in relief and forced four flyouts and six groundouts over the 20 at-bats she faced.
Highlights
- Hudson has now hit 10 doubles so far this season.
- First-year Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.), Jamerson, O'Quinn and Tew all totaled a 1.00 fielding percentage in both games today.
