Softball Outlasted by Meredith

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (9-21) dropped both games in its doubleheader today to the Meredith College Avenging Angels (19-13, 9-3 USA South) by scores of 2-0 and 7-1.

Game One
The Vixens played a stellar defensive game to start the action on Sunday with first-year Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) recording the first to outs.

Neither team could break through until the top of the sixth when the Avenging Angels tallied two runs off a single.

Those scores in the sixth would be the only two for the entirety of the game.

First-year Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) got the start for Sweet Briar and faced nine batters over 2.2 innings. Smith recorded one strikeout, two flyouts and five groundouts.

Fellow first-year Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) came into the game in the top of the third and saw a total of nine at-bats. Pisenti would force six flyouts and one groundout during her 2.1 innings at the mound.

First-year Brooke Patrick (Chesapeake, Va.) also saw action at the mound starting in the sixth inning. Patrick pitched a total of two innings, faced eighth batters and forced two flyouts and four groundouts.

At the plate, first-year's Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.), Smith, Pisenti and Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) all recorded one hit.

Game Two
Meredith kept the momentum going with three runs scored in the first inning as well as three additional tallies in the third.

The Vixens earned their first run of the day off a sacrifice hit from first-year Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.). Her ball to shortstop allowed for Smith to cross home to bring the score to 6-1.

An insurance run by the visiting team in the top of the sixth would bring the game to its eventual 7-1 close.

Four pitchers saw action at the mound for Sweet Briar in game two. O'Quinn got the start and faced 13 batters through two innings and recorded one strikeout, two flyouts and three groundouts.

Smith saw seven batters through one inning starting at the top of the third. She forced one flyout and two groundouts.

Pisenti came into the game at the top of the fourth and spent the most time in the circle with three innings pitched and 12 batters faced. Pisenti struck out one and saw six flyouts and two groundouts.

Patrick concluded action for the day in the seventh inning. She recorded two flyouts and one groundout through four batters faced.

Smith led the team with two hits while Hudson, Tew, first-year Melanie Rees (Partlow, Va.) and Kuleba each had one hit.

  • Kuleba's RBI was her eighth of the season.
  • Hudson recorded a 1.000 fielding percentage in both games seven catches, four putouts and three assists.
