Tennis Remains Undefeated in ODAC Play with Wins Against Hollins, Randolph

ROANOKE, Va. / LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (14-6, 8-0 ODAC) remains undefeated in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play after taking home 9-0 and 8-1 victories against Hollins University (3-5, 1-5 ODAC) and the Randolph WildCats (6-8, 2-6 ODAC), respectively.
 
Both doubles teams of I. Guilarte/Kotany and Bovard/A. Guilarte earned 8-0 victories in their doubles match. The pairing of Andrade/Patino took down Jones/Shaw, 8-1, at the No. 1 doubles flight to help the Vixens go up 3-0 early on.
 
In singles play, junior Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and first-years Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) earned clean 6-0, 6-0 sweeps of their opponents.
 
I. Guilarte took down Carlia Kearney at the No. 4 slot while A. Guilarte and Bovard earned victories over Mei Shalaby and Clare Vasek at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
 
At the No. 1 flight, senior Sofia Andrade (Latacunga, Ecuador) defeated Millie Shaw, 6-1, 6-0 while fellow senior Kate Kotany earned the 6-1, 6-1 victory over Charlie Miller at the No. 3 position.
 
Rounding out Sweet Briar's clean sweep was sophomore Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Peyton Jones at the No. 2 flight.
 
Over in Lynchburg, the other half of the team was replicating the success happening in Roanoke.
 
The doubles team of de Souza/Wandling earned an 8-0 victory over Fink/Santos at the No. 1 flight while Caro/Simhambhatla and Bestwick/Chen earned 8-1 and 8-4 wins, respectively.
 
Three Vixens again never conceded a single set to their opponent. Senior Ruth de Souza defeated Valentina Santos at the No. 1 spot, Allison Wandling defeated Harper Whetzel at the No. 3 spot and sophomore Maria Caro defeated Jenna Fink at the No. 4 spot
 
Playing at the No. 2 position, senior Nikhita Simhambhatla (Hyderabad, Telangana, India) took down Sabrina Dickerson, 6-1, 6-0 while first-year Isa Chen (Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil) earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Noura Elkhansa at the No. 5 flight to bring the Vixens to eight points.
 
Highlights
  • Bestwick and Chen remain a perfect 4-0 when playing together during the dual season.
  • I. Guilarte has now defeated her opponent by scores of 6-0, 6-0 four times this season.
  • Sweet Briar has now won the last three matchups against both Hollins and Randolph.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will see action at Washington and Lee on Tuesday, April 18 before closing out the regular season against Trinity (D.C.) and Averett on Saturday, April 22.
