SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (10-22) bounced back to take game two against the Carolina University Bruins (14-14, 0-2 NCCAA), 9-4 after falling in the first game by a score of 6-1.
Game One
Both teams saw runners cross home plate in the first inning of the game with Carolina opening up action with three runs.
The Vixens answered with a run of their own off a single from first-year
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) that sent fellow first-year
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) across home plate to bring the score to 3-1.
The Bruins would tack on additional runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings while holding Sweet Briar scoreless to earn a 6-1 victory.
First-year
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) got the start at the mound and faced 13 batters through 1.2 innings pitched. Smith forced a total two flyouts and three groundouts.
In relief, first-year
Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) faced 25 batters, struck out five and forced six flyouts and four groundouts.
Williams recorded the team's only RBI while both her and Hudson led the team in hits.
Game Two
The Vixens got off to an extremely hot start in the second game of the day, scoring five runs in the first inning.
A sacrifice from first-year
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C) brough in Hudson while a single from fellow first-year
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) sent Smith across home plate.
Additional runs came from Jamerson and Williams, who scored on a hit from first-year
Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) as well as Kuleba, who scored off a hit from first-year
Jasmine Mooney (St. Johnsbury, Vt.).
Despite the Bruins answering with two runs of the own in the top of the second, Sweet Briar tallied four more to close out the inning thanks to RBIs from Kuleba, first-year
Abby Wilkerson (Appomattox, Va.), first-year
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) and Mooney.
Carolina would score two more runs in the fourth but a scores fifth, sixth and top of the seventh would bring the game to its 9-4 close.
O'Quinn earned her first career victory at the mound after facing 21 batters through three innings. O'Quinn gave up zero walks and forced eight flyouts and three groundouts.
Pisenti once again took to the circle in relief, this time facing 14 batters, striking out on and forcing eight flyouts and three groundouts.
Tew, Jamerson, Kuleba, Wilkerson, O'Quinn and Mooney all recorded one RBI while Jamerson led the team with three hits.
Highlights
- Williams recorded six putouts in both games today.
- The Vixens' five runs scored in inning one of game two marks the highest run total in an opening inning for the team this season.
What's Next
The team will head to Winston-Salem, N.C. for doubleheader action against Salem College on Sunday, April 23.
