Softball Splits Doubleheader with Marymount

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (9-17) split its doubleheader with the Marymount University Saints (11-15, 3-3 AEC) this afternoon, taking the first game 8-6 before falling 8-1 in the second.

Game One
Marymount breakthrough after a scoreless first two innings to take a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth.

However, Sweet Briar would get on the board to cut the lead to one off an RBI single from first-year Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) that sent fellow first-year Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) across home plate.

The Vixens would then take the lead in the following inning with four runs scored. First-year Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) would bat two runs in with a single before advancing to second herself on the throw. Williams would follow that up with her second and third RBIs of the game, a single that allowed for Tew and Smith to score.

The game stayed competitive until the very end with the Saints tallying two more runs to come within one. Tew would earn another RBI in the sixth, followed by an RBI from first-year Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) to put Sweet Briar up 8-5 and ensure the eventual 8-6 victory.

Smith got the win at the mound; facing a total of 33 batters, walking zero, striking out two and forcing 10 flyouts and seven groundouts.

Both Tew and Williams recorded three RBIs while also recording two hits in three at-bats.

Game Two
The visiting team came back strong in the second game of the day, going up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third after another scoreless first two innings.

The Vixens' lone run of game two would come in the third after first-year Abby Wilkerson's (Appomattox, Va.) sacrifice fly to left field allowed for Smith to score her fourth run of the day.

It was all Marymount in the closing innings of the game, with the Saints scoring two runs in the fifth and four in the seventh to nail an 8-1 game closed.

First-year Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) pitched all seven innings for Sweet Briar. She faced 38 batters, earned three strikeouts and forced 11 flyouts and seven groundouts.

At the plate, Williams went three-for-three.

Highlights
  • Williams earned a hit in all but one at-bat today.
  • Both Tew and Williams recorded a career-high three RBIs in game one.
