Tennis Locks Up No. 2 Seed; Hale Becomes Winningest Head Coach in Program History

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (15-7, 9-1 ODAC) saw a number of successes in today's senior day match against the Averett University Cougars (13-3, 8-2 ODAC) after posting an 8-1 victory.
 
The Vixens earned wins in all three doubles matches with the duo of Andrade/Patino taking the first victory with an 8-3 win over Garcia/Rhysen at the No. 2 flight.
 
The pairing of Caro/Simhambhatla defeated Batterman/D. Poulakidas, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot while de Souza/Wandling saw an 8-6 win over Gunning/B. Poulakidas at the No. 1 slot.
 
In singles play, senior Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) took down Keira Gunning, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 flight.
 
Both senior Allison Wandling and junior Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) earned 6-1, 6-2 victories in their matches. Wandling took down Brenda Poulakidas at the No. 3 spot while Guilarte earned the No. 6 singles win over Amelie Brune.
 
Senior Sofia Andrade (Latacunga, Ecuador) won her No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-3 over Alejandra Garcia.
 
Fellow senior Nikhita Simhambhatla closed out the action with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Paula Rhysen at the No. 2 spot.
 
Senior Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) also put up a strong fight against Daniela Poulakidas in her senior day match, coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the first to set to take four games from her Cougar opponent.
 
Today's win over Averett gave head coach Dustin Hale his 69th career win at Sweet Briar, making him the winningest head coach in program history.
 
Additionally, the Vixens also secured the No. 2 seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Tennis Championships with the victory.

  • Andrade/Patino extend their win streak to four-straight games.
  • de Souza has blanked her opponents in at least one set six times this season. 
What's Next
The Vixens will host Roanoke in the ODAC Championship Quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 25th and will face off against Trinity (D.C.) following the completion of that match.
