Tennis Kicks Fall Season Off With Battle of the Blue Ridge

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team competed in its first fall tournament of the season yesterday as the Vixens hosted Averett and UVA Wise in the Battle of the Blue Ridge.
 
The doubles pairings of A. Guilarte/Patino and Bovard/van Eekelen won both of their doubles matches to sweep the competition in the morning. A. Guilarte/Patino first took down Gunning/Rhysen of Averett, 8-5, before defeating Azinhaga/Campodonico of Division II UVA Wise, 8-7 (7-1).
 
The duo of Bovard/van Eekelen won their matches against Knox/Nicholas (UVA Wise) and Batterman/Schroeder (Averett) by scores of 8-6.
 
Another victory over Averett came at the hands of Caracciolo/Lima who got the 8-5 win over Asher/D. Poulakidas to round out doubles victories for Sweet Briar.
 
After a rain delay and a change of facilities, singles matches got fully underway late in the afternoon.
 
Sophomore Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) bounced back from an early loss to earn the 8-3 victory over Jennika Jaison of Averett.
 
First-years Juli Caracciolo (Los Cardales, Argentina), Isadora Lima (Natal, Brazil), Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) and Guusje van Eekelen (Heeze, Netherlands) and all earned their first collegiate singles victories today.
 
Caracciolo defeated Emily Cronn (UVA Wise), 8-0, Lima toppled Kinsey Knox (UVA Wise), 8-6, Minton reigned victorious over Franka Keil (Averett), 8-2, and van Eekelen took down Harshri Asher (Averett), 8-5.
 
Sophomore Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) also got in the win column thanks to an 8-4 win against Sara Nichols (UVA Wise).
 
Additionally, junior Maria Caro (Bogota, Colombia) and Minton wrapped up their day with an 8-3 victory over Kinsey Knox of UVA Wise and an 8-0 sweep of Sara Nichols (UVA Wise), respectively.
 
Highlights
  • Minton went 2-0 in her first collegiate action.
  • Both doubles teams of A. Guilarte/Patino and Bovard/van Eekelen were also perfect with a 2-0 record on the day.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will head to the ITA DIII Southeast Regional, hosted by Mary Washington, Sept. 23-25.
