SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (5-4, 1-0 ODAC) began Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play today with a 3-2 victory over the Eastern Mennonite University Royals (3-6, 0-1 ODAC) at Thayer Field.
Sweet Briar got out to an early lead thanks to senior
Avery Jones' (Union, Conn.) fourth goal of the season at the three-minute mark.
A second goal from Jones in the second quarter of play and zero shots from the Royals gave the Vixens a 2-0 lead entering halftime.
EMU would mount a comeback in the third, tallying two goals less than five minutes apart to tie the game up at two.
With less than two minutes remaining, first-year
Emmi Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) would play the hero after tallying the game-winning goal and giving Sweet Briar the 3-2 victory.
