Field Hockey Shuts Out Meredith on Senior Day

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (4-6, 0-2 ODAC) shut out the Meredith College Avenging Angles (2-7) this evening at Thayer Field for a 2-0 victory on senior day.
 
Sophomore Emmi Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) netted the first goal for the Vixens at the 14:58 mark of the first quarter off a rebound from a shot by fellow sophomore Gigi Hutman (Bordentown, N.J.).
 
A scoreless second quarter of play kept Sweet Briar ahead by a goal entering halftime.
 
Junior Jenna Prevet (Nesconset, N.Y.) kept the team's 1-0 lead in tact with a defensive save on a shot by Meredith's Sierra Grande with a little over five minutes remaining in the game.
 
Hutman capitalized on the momentum swing in Sweet Briar's favor with a goal at the 57:31 mark off a rebound from a shot by senior Lara Jost (Würzburg, Germany) for the eventual 2-0 victory.
 
In goal, senior goalkeeper Ashley Maggiora (Hollister, Calif.) recorded six saves.
 
Highlights
  • Tonight's game marked the seventh shut out of Maggiora's career.
  • Hutman led the team with nine shots while both Jost and fellow senior Kailey McCarthy (Atkinson, N.H.) had six.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play at EMU on the 12th.
