STAUNTON, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (7-6, 0-0 ODAC) was bested by the Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels (5-8, 0-0 USA South) this afternoon by a score of 7-0.
The Fighting Squirrels got on the board in the first inning and continued to earn runs thanks to singles in the third and fourth to go up 3-0. Two two-run home runs in the bottom of the fourth and the sixth would give the home team its 7-0 victory.
First-year
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) got the start in the circle for the Vixens and struck out two through two innings. Sophomore
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) struck out five batters through her own four innings of action today.
At the plate, junior
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) and first-years
Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.),
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) and Taylor all recorded one hit.
First-year catcher
Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) led the team with nine putouts while junior first baseman
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) had seven.
Game two of the doubleheader was postponed due to unsafe wind conditions.
Highlights
- O'Quinn's five strikeouts mark a new career high while she walked zero batters for the second time this season.
- Nauful's nine putouts is the third-highest single-game total of her career.
What's Next
The Vixens will open up conference play at Lynchburg on March 23rd before returning home to face Ferrum on March 24th.
