Tennis Earns Victories at Home and on the Road

SWEET BRIAR, Va./VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (16-1, 8-0 ODAC) earned two victories today; taking down the Randolph College WildCats (7-8, 2-6 ODAC) at home, 6-3, before defeating the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins (5-7, 2-2 ODAC) on the road, 9-0.

The Vixens started the day off with a clean sweep in doubles play. Both the No. 2 doubles team of Caro/I. Guilarte and the No. 3 pairing of Caracciolo/van Eekelen earned their wins by scores of 8-0.
 
A. Guilarte/Patino fought to an 8-4 victory over Dickerson/Kersten at No. 1 doubles.
 
In singles play, senior Avery Jones (Union, Conn.), sophomore Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and first-year Isadora Lima (Natal, Brazil) won their matches in straight sets.
 
Jones took down Molly McNair, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 while A. Guilarte defeated Sabrina Dickerson in the No. 2 match by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Lima won her first No. 3 singles set over Noura Elkhansa, 6-1, before earning a perfect 6-0 score in set two.

Sweet Briar then hit the road to Virginia Beach to earn the team's seventh perfect 9-0 sweep of the season.
 
Caro/I. Guilarte once again captured a doubles win, this time at No. 1, thanks to an 8-6 victory over Engelberts/Flink. The duo of Caracciolo/van Eekelen also secured a second doubles victory on the day with an 8-1 defeat of Lewes/Thomas at No. 2.
 
The No. 3 team of Bovard/Minton went on to a solid 8-0 win against Abrams/Haydon.
 
At No. 1 singles, senior Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tuva Flink while junior Maria Caro (Bogota, Colombia) took down Sophie Engelberts at No. 2 by scores of 6-3, 6-2.
 
First-years Julia Caracciolo (Los Cardales, Argentina), Guusje van Eekelen (Heeze, Netherlands) and Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) saw action at the No. 3 – No. 6 spots and won their matches by scores of 6-3, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
 
Rounding out the sweep for the Vixens was sophomore Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) who took home the 6-2, 6-2 victory over Haley Haydon.
 
Highlights
  • Bovard, Lima and Minton all remain undefeated in singles play during the dual season with records of 4-0, 11-0 and 6-0, respectively.
  • The duo of Bovard/Minton are also unbeaten so far this season with a 3-0 record.
  • Sweet Briar has now won the last four matches against Randolph and Virginia Wesleyan.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will wrap up the regular season at Southern Virginia on April 17th and Averett on April 20th before returning home to face No. 17 Washington and Lee on April 21st.
