Softball Battles No. 7 Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (10-21, 3-15 ODAC) battled in today's doubleheader against the No. 7 Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets (24-2-2, 15-1 ODAC), falling by scores of 8-0 in game one and 3-2 in game two.

Game One
The Yellow Jackets got the bats hot early into action in game one scoring two runs back-to-back in the first and second innings.

A three-run third inning for the home team, followed by a scoreless fourth, increased Randolph-Macon's lead to seven.

With the Vixens failing to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth, and an additional run scored by the Yellow Jackets, the game concluded after five innings with the score at 8-0.

Sophomore Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) got the start in the circle and went two innings. Both first-year Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) and sophomore Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) came into the game in relief and saw one and 1.1 innings of action, respectively.

Taylor and sophomore Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) recorded Sweet Briar's lone two hits in the game while first-year center fielder Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) led the team with five putouts.

Game Two
Game two of the day was a nail biter down to the very end with Randolph-Macon once again getting on the board first with two runs scored in the first inning.

However, the Vixens answered back with a triple from first-year Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) to cut the home team's lead to just one.

A single from sophomore Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) would tie the game up at two in the top of the third.

The next few innings went scoreless until a single from the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the seventh gave them the 3-2 victory.

O'Quinn was the lone pitcher in the matchup and the Virginia native only allowed three earned runs through 27 at-bats.

Tew led the team with two hits while fellow sophomore Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) hit Sweet Briar's other triple in the game in the first inning.

Sophomore first baseman Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) led the team defensively with five putouts.

Highlights
  • Martin's five putouts in game one ties her career high.
  • O'Quinn's ERA of 3.32 in game two marks her second-lowest single-game ERA through six innings pitched this season.
