SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (11-22, 4-16 ODAC) battled in a hard-fought doubleheader against the Guilford College Quakers (16-20, 8-10) this afternoon. The Vixens came back from a 5-1 game one loss to take game two 4-1.
Game One
A single to center field by first-year
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) helped Sweet Briar take the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Quakers battled back after a scoreless second inning to tally two runs in the third and one in the fourth to take the 3-1 lead.
Additional runs scored in both the top of the fifth and seventh innings gave the visitors the 5-1 victory.
Taylor spent all seven innings in the circle and totaled seven strike outs in 29 at-bats while also leading the team at the plate with her one RBI.
Sophomore
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) and first-year
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) also earned a hit in game one while first-year catcher
Ciara Nauful totaled seven putouts.
Game Two
In a similar storyline to game one, the team who scored first in game two did not leave with the win.
As the two teams battled through four scoreless innings, a homerun from Guilford finally got them on the board in the top of the fifth.
Sweet Briar answered back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the innings with a safe sacrifice bunt play from Taylor scoring both Martin and sophomore
Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.).
The Vixens tacked on two more runs in the sixth thanks to a double from sophomore
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) and a fielder's choice play that saw Jamerson out at first and Kuleba across home for the second time in the game.
Sophomore
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) gave up only one earned run in her seven innings of action while striking out seven in 25 at-bats.
Hudson, Jamerson and Taylor all earned one RBI while sophomore first baseman
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) led all field players with eight putouts.
Highlights
- O'Quinn's seven strikeouts in game two marks the highest single-game strikeout total of her career.
- First-year catcher Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) was right behind Williams in game two putouts with seven.
- Sweet Briar has defeated Guilford for the first time since the team took home a 3-2 victory on April 5, 2008.
