SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (13-22, 4-16 ODAC) nabbed the program's first win over the Methodist University Monarchs (17-17, 7-7 USA South) this afternoon with a doubleheader sweep.
The Vixens took game one in five innings by a score of 11-3 before walking off game two, 5-4.
Game One
The Vixens got the bats hot early with four runs scored in the first inning of play.
Sophomore
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) got things started with a two-RBI single to center field before first-year
Emily Roberts (Walkertown, N.C.) sent fellow first-year
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) home on a ground ball to the shortstop.
A single from sophomore
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) to left field would bring home the fourth run of the inning.
It was the same story in the bottom of the second with four more runs scored thanks to singles from first-years
Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) and
Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.).
The Monarchs got themselves on the board with two runs in the top of the third to bring the score to 8-2.
However, the Vixens answered back immediately with a sacrifice fly from Dorrier which increased the lead to seven.
Despite Methodist getting another run across home plate in the top of the fifth, the game would end in the bottom of the inning as Dorrier singled to center field to bring home sophomores
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) and
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.). The two runs scored gave Sweet Briar the eight-run lead needed to end action early with the score at 11-3.
Sophomore
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) spent all five innings in the circle and struck out two while only allowing two earned runs and one walk.
Dorrier led the team at the plate with her four RBIs while Steppe led action in the field with four putouts.
Game Two
The Vixens also kicked off the scoring in game two with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
A single from first-year
Emma Staton (Buckingham, Va.) brought home Roberts and Dorrier while a single from Hudson scored Staton.
Methodist's one run scored in the fourth and three in the second gave the visitors the 4-3 lead heading into the final inning.
After the top of the seventh inning went scoreless, Tew tied things up with a single to right field bringing Jamerson across home plate.
Roberts played the hero when her walk-off single scored Taylor for the 5-4 victory.
Taylor saw all seven innings of action and struck out six through 28 at-bats. She also led the team with three hits while Staton totaled two RBIs.
In the field, first-year catcher
