BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (14-23, 4-16 ODAC) split today's doubleheader on the road against the Southern Virginia University Knights (15-21, 10-6 USA South).
The Vixens took the 6-3 victory in the eight-inning game one, before falling 9-1 with six innings completed in game two.
Game One
The Vixens saw a homerun in the very first at-bat of the doubleheader as sophomore
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) hit her fourth of the season over the left field fence.
Fellow sophomore
Victoria Tew's sacrifice fly (Hope Mills, N.C.) to left field brought home sophomore
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) three at-bats later to extend Sweet Briar's lead to 2-0.
Hudson earned her second RBI of the game in the second inning as her sacrifice fly to center field allowed first-year
Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) to cross home plate.
However, a three-run bottom of the fourth from the home team tied things up at three at the midway point of game one.
Both teams went scoreless through the next three innings forcing an extra eighth.
The Vixens tallied three runs in the top of the inning thanks to a double from first-year
Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) a sacrifice fly from Steppe and a single from Jamerson to go up 6-3.
With the Knights failing to get on the board in the bottom of the eighth, the game concluded with Sweet Briar taking the victory.
Sophomore pitcher
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) got the start for the Vixens while first-year
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) came into the game in the fifth. Both pitchers spent four innings in the circle with O'Quinn giving up zero walks and Taylor striking out three.
Hudson led the team with her two RBIs while Jamerson totaled four hits. In the field, sophomore first baseman
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, Va.) recorded nine putouts.
Game Two
The first two innings of game two went scoreless before Dorrier's single to left field put the Vixens on the board.
Southern Virginia answered right back with a home run to tie things back up, this time at one run a piece.
The Knights took the lead with an additional run scored in the bottom of the fourth before increasing their lead further with a four-run fifth innings to go up 6-1.
Three more runs for the home team in the bottom of the sixth ended the game early with the score at 9-1 in favor of Southern Virginia.
Taylor started things off for Sweet Briar in the circle and struck out two through her three innings of action while only giving up one earned run. O'Quinn pitched two innings in the game while first-year
Ruby Hite (Clarksville, Va.) came in to record the final two outs.
Dorrier had a team-high one RBI while four Vixens each recorded one hit. Williams once again led the team in putouts, this time recording seven.
