Softball Sees Another Program First With Win Over Roanoke

TROUTVILLE, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (10-13, 3-7 ODAC) earned another program first win, this time over the Roanoke College Maroons (11-7, 3-1 ODAC), with a split in today's doubleheader. The Vixens took the first game, 2-1, before falling in the second, 3-0.

Game One
The Maroons took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, however, the Vixens would quickly answer back just a few innings later with runs scored in both the top of the fourth and fifth.

A single to right field from sophomore Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) helped Sweet Briar tie the game up while a ball hit to the shortstop by first-year Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) gave the team the lead.

Scoreless sixth and seventh innings would be enough to ensure the game one, 2-1 victory.

Sophomore Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) spent all seven innings in the circle and struck out three for her third win of the season.

Jamerson led the team on offense with her two hits while sophomore first baseman Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) totaled 10 putouts to lead all field players in the first game.

Game Two
Game Two of the doubleheader was an equally close contest with neither team scoring a run through the first five innings of play.

Roanoke would break the scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth; which would be the only runs scored in the 3-0 win for the home team.

Once again, a single pitcher spent the entire game in the circle as first-year Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) recorded five strikeouts in six innings of action.

Jamerson, Taylor, sophomore Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) and first-year Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) all recorded one hit.

First-year catcher Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) earned six putouts to lead the team.

Highlights
  • O'Quinn's ERA of 1.00 in game one marks her second-lowest single-game ERA of the season.
  • Tew's 10 putouts at first base is a new career-high in that statistical category.
  • Today's win is the first for Sweet Briar against Roanoke after 18 meetings between the two programs dating back to 2006.
