Softball Drops Doubleheader with Bridgewater

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (10-15, 3-9 ODAC) fell in both games of today's doubleheader against the Bridgewater College Eagles (15-14, 8-3 ODAC) this afternoon by scores of 6-1 and 9-0.

Game One
The Eagles got out to an early 2-0 lead following the completion of the first inning thanks to a home run and a double.

The following three innings would go scoreless before Bridgewater tacked on three more runs to increase its lead to five.

Sophomore Ana Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) found her away around the bases thanks to a trio of passed balls after getting on with a single to center field to get the Vixens on the board.

A centerfield single from the visitors brought the score to 6-1 while a scoreless seventh ensured the five-run victory for the Eagles.

First-year Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) got the start and struck out three batters over her four innings in the circle. Both sophomores Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) and Smith struck out a batter of their own in their two and one innings of action, respectively.

Sophomore Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) once again led the team with two hits while sophomore first baseman Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) recorded seven putouts.

Game Two
The Eagles once again started the game off with a run scored in the very first half inning of action. They continued their offensive momentum in the next two innings with six runs scored in the top of the second and one in the top of the third.

With Bridgewater tacking on an additional run in the fifth inning to bring its total to nine, and the Vixens failing to get on the board, the game would conclude prematurely after the completion of the fifth.

The trio of O'Quinn, Smith and Taylor once again saw action in the circle with Smith getting the start in game two. The Rocky Mount, Va. native struck out a single batter during her inning of action while Taylor would go on to strike out four throughout the fourth and fifth innings of play.

First-year Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) totaled two hits to lead the Vixens' offense while first-year catcher Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) earned seven putouts; including a nice catch on a pop foul to conclude the top of the fifth.

Highlights
  • Steppe's seven putouts mark a new career high.
  • Both Jamerson and Martin have now had six multi-hit games so far this season.
