Field Hockey Battles in Season Opener at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Sweet Briar College field hockey (0-1, 0-0 ODAC) battled in this afternoon's season opener against the Kenyon College Owls (1-0, 0-0 NCAC) to come back from a three-goal deficit before ultimately falling by a score of 4-3.

After a scoreless first quarter which saw senior goalkeeper Ashley Maggiora (Hollister, Calif.) rack up nine saves, the Owls got on the board first at the 24:43 mark.

The home team added two more tallies to bring the score to 3-0  in the third before sophomore Gigi Hutman (Bordentown, N.J.) got the Vixens on the scoresheet with less than thirty seconds remaining in the quarter.

After Kenyon scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, it was all Sweet Briar in the remaining three minutes of play.

Ssenior Kailey McCarthy (Atkinson, N.H.) tallied the second goal of the game on an ensuing penalty corner play off an assist from fellow senior Lara Jost (Würzburg, Germany) cut the lead down to two.

Another converted penalty corner play, this time by junior Ashley Prevet (Nesconset, N.Y.) as time expired brought the game to its 4-3 close in favor of the Owls.

"The effort from this young team today was phenomenal! Their never say die attitude sealed the deal, adding two goals in the fourth. With another five minutes, I'm certain we would have tied. I'm proud of the execution of the team defense, team offense and goalkeepers"

Head Coach, Hannah Lott
