Tennis Dominates as Hosts of Battle of the Blue Ridge

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team continued its fall tournament dominance today as the hosts of the annual Battle of the Blue Ridge against Guilford College, Piedmont University and Washington College.
 
Five Vixens won all four of their matches on the day as seniors Maria Caro (Bogota, Colombia), Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela), junior Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomores Juli Caracciolo (Los Cardales, Argentina) and Isadora Lima (Natal, Brazil) won two singles and two doubles matches each.
 
Notable wins for the quartet included Caro's 6-0, 6-0 victory against Brooklyn Bolch of Piedmont, I. Guilarte's 6-2, 6-2 win over Alyssa McSpadden of Piedmont and the doubles team of Caracciolo/Lima taking down Robinson/Sanabia of Piedmont, 6-0.
 
Senior Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) and sophomore Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) both earned victories in three out of four matches they contested today. Patino earned a 4-1, 4-5 (9-11), 1-0 (7-4) win against Eva Kading of Washington College in singles play while going undefeated with partner Caro in doubles action.
 
Minton took home wins in both of her singles matches against Sarah Row of Piedmont and Chandler Sizemore of Guilford by scores of 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) and 4-0, 4-2, respectively.
 
Junior Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) defeated Sizemore, 6-3, 6-2, in her first singles match of the day after also earning a 6-0 win against Soto Salgado/Ward of Guilford with partner Minton in doubles play.
 
Rounding out the wins for Sweet Briar was first-year Ari Cope (Richmond, Va.) whose 6-2, 6-0 takedown of Bethany Lupo of Guilford marked the first singles win of her collegiate career.
 
Highlights
  • With three wins today, Patino has now secured 100 career victories.
  • Caracciolo, Caro, A. Guilarte, I. Guilarte, Lima and Minton remain undefeated in singles play.
  • The duos of Caro/I. Guilarte and Caracciolo/Lima sit at 6-0 and 5-0 records, respectively.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will make an appearance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Southeast Regional Championship, Sept. 21st – 23rd.
