Soccer Nets Pair Against Guilford

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College soccer team (4-8-0, 0-7-0 ODAC) found the back of the net twice in tonight's 6-2 loss to the Guilford College Quakers (8-4-2, 2-4-0 ODAC).

In the first half, Guilford surged to a 3-0 lead within the opening thirty-four minutes, but Sweet Briar responded with resilience. First-year Elena Fomin (Middlesex County, Va.) broke through for Sweet Briar near the end of the half with a strong individual effort, scoring unassisted at the 37-minute mark to cut into the deficit. The Vixens held up defensively thanks to junior goalkeeper Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.), who registered nine saves in the first half. However, Guilford capitalized on a penalty and sharp finishes to push ahead 5-1 by halftime, despite additional saves and defensive stops from Viccora and the Sweet Briar back line. Vixens attacking threats included chances from juniors Emily Michel (Centennial, Colo.) and Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) and Fomin, who managed shots on goal in the opening half.

The second half saw a more disciplined Sweet Briar defense that limited Guilford to just one additional goal. Sweet Briar kept pressing and found another highlight when Diaz scored unassisted in the 83rd minute, on what was her sixth goal of the season, showcasing her attacking prowess. Viccora remained a force in net, totaling ten saves in the back period and finishing the game with nineteen saves against fifty-one Guilford shots, a standout performance under pressure. Junior Elise Bennett (Louisa, Va.) and Michel provided offensive energy, each notching attempts and pushing Guilford's goalkeeper to make critical stops. Across the match, Fomin and Diaz stood out as Sweet Briar's goal scorers in a game where the Vixens never stopped fighting, making key defensive and attacking plays to challenge their opponent until the final whistle

Highlights
  • Sweet Briar last scored two or more goals against the Quakers during the 2013 season.
  • Viccora's 19 saves mark a new career high.
