SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (2-10, 0-6 ODAC) was taken down by the No. 24/24 Washington and Lee University Generals (10-4, 4-1 ODAC) in a rainy-evening match at Thayer Field by a score of 8-0.
Sweet Briar started with first-year
Aurora Duffie (Gloucester, Va.) in goal and faced relentless offensive pressure from Washington and Lee. The Vixens conceded three goals in the opening fifteen minutes. Defensively, Duffie was active early, and her efforts included making several interventions to delay Washington and Lee's momentum and keep the deficit from growing in the first quarter.
The Vixens continued to battle defensively in the second quarter, with Duffie making two saves amid a barrage of shots. Despite Washington and Lee adding another goal, Duffie's shot-stopping helped limit the damage. The defensive back line, including first-years
Antonia Supino (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and
Lyla Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.), helped contest penalty corners and clear dangerous balls under intense pressure. Sweet Briar's defensive hustle was on full display through repeated blocks.
Sophomore
Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) entered as the goalkeeper, stepping into the net for Sweet Briar to begin the third. Hart faced immediate pressure, making four saves during the quarter as Washington and Lee managed to score three more times. Hart's athletic performance prevented an even larger deficit, and her resilience stood out as a highlight for Sweet Briar. The Vixens held strong during penalty corners and continued to put bodies in front of the ball, with defenders stepping up to challenge opposing attackers
In the final quarter, Sweet Briar managed their lone shot of the game, with Supino getting a look at the goal late after the team earned back-to-back penalty corners. Although her attempt was blocked, it represented a hard-earned offensive opportunity for the team. Hart continued in goal and recorded another save, finishing the game with four total saves. Sophomore
Larkin Shire (Caroline County, Va.) and first-year
Bella Cosden (Gettysburg, Pa.) contributed to late pushes in penalty corners, and the squad closed out the match by showing persistence on both ends of the field despite the score line
