Volleyball Blanked by Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -  The Sweet Briar College volleyball team (0-16) was blanked by the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls (4-12, 1-9 CIAA) in action today, falling in straight sets by scores of 25-7, 25-11 and 25-7.

Sweet Briar got off to a tough start in the opening set, struggling to generate offense against a strong Johnson C. Smith side. First-year Rachael Hunt (Willow Spring, N.C.) posted a .500 hitting percentage in the set, leading with one kill and contributing one dig. Senior Davis Shiflett (Louisa, Va.) provided reliable serve-receive, while senior Clara Delattre (Long Lake, Minn.) and sophomore Mila Mutabdzija (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) both added attack attempts. Junior Gracyn Wright (Rock Hill, S.C.) registered a perfect 1.000 reception percentage. Despite those bright spots, Sweet Briar dropped the set 25-7.

The second frame saw Sweet Briar keep pace for longer stretches, improving their offensive rhythm. Hunt another kill, pushing her hitting percentage up to .333 for the set, along with a dig. Shiflett emerged with one kill and a .250 percentage, while Mutabdzija led with five attack attempts and two kills. Wright contributed solid defense and serve-receive, finishing with two digs. Roberts attempted four attacks, fighting for points on the outside. The effort narrowed Johnson C. Smith's margin, but Sweet Briar still trailed and finished the set at 25-11.

In the final set, Sweet Briar made a run but couldn't fully close the gap, ending 25-7. Wright led the team defensively with four attacks. Mutabdzija also added key digs and attack attempts, working to generate more offense for the team. Sweet Briar improved in the last set but was unable to overcome consistent Johnson C. Smith scoring runs.

Highlights
  • Hunt registered a career-high attacking percentage of .333.
  • Mutabdzija and Hunt led the team in kills, while Shiflett and Wright led the team in digs.
