HAMPTON, Va. – The Sweet Briar College swim team (0-6, 0-0 ODAC) wrapped up November action this weekend with action at the three-day Yellow Jacket Invite, hosted by Randolph-Macon College, where the Vixens placed eighth.
Sweet Briar athletes competed in multiple events throughout the meet, representing their college in relay and individual races. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Sweet Briar's team of first-year
Ava Powers (Crandall, Texas), sophomores
Carlee Minyard (Jacksonville, Fla.) and
Karissa Boyce (Red Rock, Texas) and junior
Julia Elliott (Norfolk, Va.) swam to a finals time of 2:38.12. Each team member posted splits with Powers at 39.91, Minyard at 40.63, Boyce at 41.04, and Elliott at 36.54, collectively earning their school vital points and showcasing their determination in a competitive field.
On the individual side, sophomore
Geneva Seitz (Havre de Grace, Md.) finished the 500-yard freestyle in 6:44.13, while Sweet Briar saw several competitors entered in the 50-yard freestyle, including junior
EJ Scherrer (Simpsonville, S.C.) (31.40), sophomore
Emily Carter (Kermit, W. Va.) (35.15), Elliott (36.77), Powers (38.43), Minyard (41.16) and Boyce (42.89). These performances demonstrated the range and commitment of Sweet Briar's athletes from the quick sprints to the distance challenges.
Carter, Scherrer, Seitz and Elliot all competed in the 400-yard medley relay and posted a time of 5:41.54.
In the 200-yard medley relay, the Sweet Briar squad comprised of Powers, Minyard, Boyce and Seitz, who together posted a time of 3:07.69. Their combined efforts in multiple strokes highlighted their versatility, with Powers opening in 49.68, followed by extended splits from Minyard, Boyce, with Seitz finishing in 28.75, reflecting their resilience in a tough lineup.
Both Elliott and Powers saw action in the 100-yard backstroke, with Elliott touching the wall at the 1:46.27 mark and Powers completing the race in 1:52.34.
Seitz was the lone Sweet Briar entry in the 1650-yard freestyle and recorded a time of 23:31.12 in the endurance race.
The Vixens also had solid representation in the 100-yard freestyle, as Scherrer finished in 1:08.95, Carter in 1:15.18, Elliott in 1:25.07, Minyard in 1:27.89 and Powers in 1:30.80. These consistent showings in both individual and relay events showcased the athletes' hard work and competitive spirit throughout the meet.
The Invitational concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay, which saw the team of Carter, Elliott, Minyard and Scherrer earn a time of 5:18.48.
Highlights
- Carter set a new personal-best time in the 100-yard freestyle.
- Both Elliot and Minyard bested their previous fastest times in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.
- Minyard and Seitz also set new personal bests in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard butterfly with times of 2:06.94 and 1:24.69, respectively.
