ORLANDO, Fla. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (4-2, 1-0 ODAC) split today's action at the USTA National Campus with the St. Catherine University Wildcats (7-1, 2-1 MIAC) and the Franciscan University Barons (10-7, 4-4 PAC).
Sweet Briar fell to the Wildcats 4-3 before bouncing back to down the Barons 6-1.
vs. St. Catherine
The Vixens' lone win in doubles came from the No. 3 duo of Bovard/Minton. The pair took down King/Zink by a score of 6-2.
In singles play, senior
Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) and sophomores
Juli Caracciolo (Los Cardales, Argentina) and
Isadora Lima (Natal, Brazil) all won their matches.
Patino handily defeated Faith Simon at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0 while Caracciolo also earned her victory in straight sets with a 6-1, 7-6 (5-0) win over Caitlyn Stadter at No. 3 singles.
Lima fought back from a 6-0 loss in set one to take set two, 7-6 (5-0), and the tiebreak set, 6-4, for the win against Monica Zink at the No. 4 slot.
Junior
Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) forced extra games in her No. 6 singles match with Marie Pelletier while junior
Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore
Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) combined to win 12 of the games they played.
vs. Franciscan
Sweet Briar took the doubles point thanks to victories in all three of the matches. At No. 1 doubles, Guilarte/Lima defeated Mistry/Swift, 6-0 while Bovard/Patino earned a 6-1 win against Glen/Stickney at No. 2.
The No. 3 doubles team of Caracciolo/Minton also secured a swift 6-0 victory against Leon/VanderPloog.
In singles play, both Lima and Minton won their matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Patino did not drop a single game in her first set 6-0 victory against Claire Cardie at the No. 1 spot before going on to win set two, 6-2. Guilarte saw a No. 2 singles victory of 7-5, 6-1 over Olivia Colby while Bovard wrapped up the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 takedown of Lucy Rochat at No. 6.
