SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (11-5, 0-2 ODAC) fell to the Averett University Cougars (10-8, 2-0 ODAC) in the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader of the season.
Game One
The first game of the afternoon saw the first inning go scoreless before Averett took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
After another two scoreless innings, the Cougars tacked on a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to bring their lead to 4-0 heading into the final inning of action.
A five-run top of the seventh saw the visitors take game one by a score of 9-0.
Sophomore
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) got the start in the circle for the Vixens and struck out one through two innings.
Junior
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) saw four innings of action while first-year
Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) contested the final inning.
Five Sweet Briar players registered a hit in the game while junior
Kaylie Hudson's (Lynchburg, Va.) first-inning hit was a double to center field. Sophomore
Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) led the team with seven putouts at first base.
Game Two
Game two also saw scoreless action to open things up. Neither Averett nor Sweet Briar got a run on the board until the Cougars saw two cross home plate in the top of the third.
An additional five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth saw Averett take the 8-0 victory after six innings.
Purvis got the start for Sweet Briar and spent five innings in the circle while junior
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) closed out the final inning.
Sophomore
Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) recorded the lone hit for the Vixens thanks to her center-field single in the bottom of the second. Steppe once again led the team in putouts at first base.
Highlights
- Dorrier has registered at least one hit in the last four games.
- Steppe is now tied with fellow sophomore Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) for most putouts on the team with 57.
