SWEET BRIAR, Va. - The Sweet Briar College softball team (12-6, 1-3 ODAC) recorded another program first this afternoon with a 3-0 victory in game two against the Eastern Mennonite University Royals (8-7-1, 1-1 ODAC).
The Vixens bounced back from a 7-2 loss in game one to earn the historic win.
Game One
Game one of the afternoon started off closely contested with the first inning of action going scoreless.
EMU broke through in the top of the second with a run to get on the board, however, the Vixens answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning as senior
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) crossed home plate off a hit from sophomore
Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.).
Sweet Briar then took the 2-1 lead in the third as junior
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score fellow junior
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.).
The game got tied back up in the fourth and a five-run inning in the top of the sixth game the Royals their eventual 7-2 victory.
Junior
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) got the start in the circle for the Vixens and pitched 5.2 innings while striking out two. Fellow junior Ana Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) completed the final 1.1. of action.
At the plate, Hudson, sophomores
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) and
Emma Staton (Buckingham, Va.) and Tew all registered hits.
Sophomore
Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) recorded nine of the team's 21 putouts at first base.
Game Two
Game two was low-scoring affair with the only runs in the game coming from the Vixens.
First-year
Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) hit a double to left field in the bottom of the third that scored both Hudson and Martin and allowed the team to take a 2-0 lead.
Sweet Briar then added an insurance run in the sixth inning thanks to a center-field double by Jamerson to bring first-year
Emily Cottingham (Chesterfield, Va.) home.
With no run scored by the Royals in the top of the seventh, the Vixens took game two by a score of 3-0.
Sawyers pitched a complete game and struck out two as she improved her record to 4-1 and her ERA 1.69.
Jamerson led the team with three hits while also earning one RBI and two stolen bases.
Steppe once again totaled the most putouts on the team with 10.

- Jamerson recorded three hits in a single game for the third time this season.
- Sawyers sits within the top-10 in the conference in earned run average (ERA).
- Steppe ranks in the top-10 in the conference putouts with a total of 76.
What's Next
The Vixens will host Mary Baldwin on March 24th before contesting back-to-back doubleheaders against Roanoke on the 29th and at Bridgewater on the 30th.
