Tennis Takes Down Bridgewater, Southern Virginia

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (5-3, 2-0 ODAC) took victories in both their matches at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center today, first defeating the Bridgewater College Eagles (1-6, 0-2 ODAC), 7-0, before taking down the Southern Virginia University Knights (3-4, 1-0 USA South), 6-1.

The Vixens took victories in all three doubles matches against the Eagles as Bestwick/Cope led the way with a swift 6-1 victory over Weaver/Wichael at No. 3.
 
Guilarte/Patino also earned a 6-1 victory in their No. 1 doubles match against Slagle/Whetzel while Bovard/Caracciolo secured the sweep for Sweet Briar with a 6-3 defeat of Crabill/Staton at No. 2.
 
In singles play, four Vixens conceded zero games in at least one set of action. Senior Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sarah Stagle at No. 1 and sophomore Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) recorded the same set scores in her No. 6 victory over Charlotte Weaver.
 
Fellow sophomore Juli Caracciolo (Los Cardales, Argentina) saw a 6-0, 6-3 win versus Jolexie Whetzel at No. 2 through and junior Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) earned a 6-2, 6-0 takedown of Raea Crabill at No. 3.
 
Rounding out the sweep for Sweet Briar was sophomore Isadora Lima (Natal, Brazil) who defeated Emma Staton in the No. 4 match, 6-1, 6-1, and junior Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) who achieved a 6-2, 6-2 No. 5 win against Devon Wichael.

The Vixens started the evening match against the Knights the same way they left off against the Eagles, with sweeping victories in doubles action.
 
Both Bovard/Caracciolo and Lima/Minton earned perfect 6-0 wins in their No. 2 and No. 3 matches, respectively.
 
Guilarte/Patino defeated Molanphy/Snelson, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot to help Sweet Briar remain perfect.
 
Minton once again was the fastest finisher of the match as she took care of her No. 5 match against Sadie Walton quickly with scores of 6-0, 6-0.
 
Patino earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Lydia Delich at No. 2 while Bovard saw a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Elizabeth Ursenbach at No. 6.
 
Guilarte won her second match at the No. 3 spot by scores of 6-2, 6-2, this time earning the win against Jillian Arnold.
 
Lima bounced back from a first-set loss at No. 4 singles to take set 6-0 before ultimately winning her match by retirement in the third after while being up 5-2.
 
Highlights
  • Minton has now won two matches this season by score of 6-0, 6-0 and four total throughout her career.
  • Sweet Briar extends the win streak against both Bridgewater and Southern Virginia to three.

The Vixens will host Virginia Wesleyan on March 21st and Trinity Washington and Guilford on March 22nd.
