Softball Drops Doubleheader to Mary Baldwin

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (12-8, 1-3 ODAC) dropped today's doubleheader against the Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels (14-8, 0-2  USA South).

The Vixens fell in the six-inning game one, 10-2, and game two by a score of 6-4.

Game One

The Fighting Squirrels got the scoring started early with five runs in the top of the first. The visitors then tacked on an additional run in the third increasing its lead to six.

A sacrifice fly by first-year Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) got Sweet Briar on the board in the bottom of the third, however, Mary Baldwin answered back with two runs in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth to bring the score to 10-1.

Junior Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) came home in the bottom of the sixth for the Vixens' second run of the game but with no more runs scored the game came to an early 10-2 close.

First-year Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) got the start in the circle for Sweet Briar while seniors Ana Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) and Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) both saw action in relief.

At the plate, sophomore Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) went three-for-three with one run scored while Sawyers tallied the only RBI of the game.  Steppe led the team with nine putouts.

Game Two

Game two of the doubleheader saw the Vixens take the early lead off a center-field single from senior Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) which scored Martin in the first inning.

The Fighting Squirrels then came back to tally runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to go up 3-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sawyers once again provided reliable offense with a left-field double that brought Martin home for the second time in the game. First-year Grace Rokos (Jacksonville, N.C.) then hit a single to left field in the very next at-bat which eventually brought both her and Sawyers home to take a 4-3 lead.

However, Mary Baldwin's own three-run inning in the top of the seventh put the victory back in its hands by a score of 6-4.

Sawyers pitched a complete game for Sweet Briar and struck out two. She also registered one of three RBIs for the team along with Tew and Rokos.
Sophomore Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) recorded five putouts at both first and third base.

Highlights
  • Martin was perfect at the plate for the fourth game this season.
  • The team recorded three extra-base hits between the two games.
