BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (12-12, 1-7 ODAC) dropped both games in today's doubleheader at the Bridgewater College Eagles (15-9, 5-1 ODAC).
The Vixens fell in game one, 12-7, and in a six-inning game two by a score of 9-1.
Game One
The Eagles got on the board early with two runs in the first and seven in the second to take the 9-0 lead.
Sweet Briar answered back over the next three innings with five runs of their own while holding Bridgewater scoreless.
Junior
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) and first-year
Leila Atienza (Jacksonville, N.C.) earned the RBIs in the third and fourth innings, respectively.
In the fifth, ensuing plays off junior
Lauren Jamerson's (Buckingham, Va.) single allowed for fellow junior
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.), sophomore
Ruby Hite (Clarksville, Va.) and first-year
Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va.) to cross home plate and bring the score of the game to 9-5.
However, the Eagles went on to score the next three runs of the game to go up 12-5 entering the top of the seventh.
Jamerson and Atienza both recorded their second RBIs of the game in the seventh, but with only two runs scored, the home took the 12-7 victory.
First-year
Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) got the start in the circle for the Vixens while O'Quinn closed out the final 4.1 innings.
Sophomore
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) went three-for-four with one run scored and two stolen bases.
Game Two
After the first two innings of game two went scoreless, Bridgewater got on the board first with a four-run outing in the bottom of the third.
The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the fifth to increase their lead to seven.
Sweet Briar's lone run of the game came at the hands of Sawyers whose sixth-inning double to center field brought home Martin.
Two more runs by Bridgewater in the bottom of the inning gave them the early 9-1 victory.
Sophomore
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) got the start in game two while junior
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) and first-year
Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) both saw action in the game as well.
Highlights
- Jamerson sits third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in stolen bases with 20 on 21 attempts.
- Martin moved into second in the ODAC in runs scored with 28.
What's Next
The Vixens will host Marymount on April 1st before heading to Guilford on April 5th.
