Softball Sweeps Marymount

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (14-12, 1-7 ODAC) swept today's doubleheader against the Marymount University Saints (6-17, 0-2 AEC).
 
The Vixens won a closely contested game one, 5-4, before taking game two 13-0 in five innings.
 
Game One
The Vixens started the scoring off early with a two-run outing in the first innings.
 
First-year Abi Sawyers's (Matthews, N.C.) left-field double brought in sophomore Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) for the first run of the inning while Sawyers came home on the following play to make it 2-0.
 
The Saints mounted a comeback in the top of the third with three runs scored to turn the tides in their favor, 3-2.
 
However, Sweet Briar answered back with a double from Martin in centerfield to score junior Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) and tie the game up.
 
Marymount tacked on another run in the fifth to once again take a one-run lead, but junior Kaylie Hudson's (Lynchburg, Va.) center-field double in the bottom of the inning gave the Vixens the lead back with the score at 5-4.
 
Following a scoreless sixth and top of the seventh, Sweet Briar came away with the victory.
 
Sawyers got the start in the circle in struck out two through five innings to get the win while sophomore Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) recorded two strikeouts as well in her two innings of action to get the save.
 
At the plate, Martin went two-for-three with one double, one RBI and one run while Hudson totaled two RBIs.
 
Game Two
The Vixens kept the bats hot in game two with four runs scored in the first inning.
 
Hudson sent both junior Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) and Martin in on her single to centerfield while Hudson crossed home plate on an error and sophomore Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) drove Tew in.
 
In the bottom of the second, the scoring got started with a grand slam from Jamerson to increase the lead to eight followed by a single from Dorrier which scored Tew and Hudson.
 
With the score at 10-0, Sweet Briar added three more runs in the fourth. Tew hit a single to left field which scored first-year Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) and junior Anna Smith's (Rocky Mount, Va.) outfield single brought both Dorrier and sophomore Courtney Pribble (Evington, Va.) across home plate to bring the game to 13-0.
 
After Marymount was held scoreless in the fifth, the game came to its early 13-0 close.
 
Highlights
  • Game two of the doubleheader marks the first scoreless complete game for O'Quinn in her career.
  • Martin now sits atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in batting average while being second in on-base percentage runs scored and hits.
  • Today's grand slam brings Jamerson to 20 RBIs, fifth in the conference.
