GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (14-14, 1-9 ODAC) returned to conference action this afternoon with a doubleheader at the Guilford College Quakers (11-17, 2-8 ODAC).
The Vixens dropped both games in the outing with a five-inning 11-3 loss in game one and an eight-inning 3-2 loss in game two.
Game One
Sweet Briar scored the first runs in game one of today's doubleheader.
Senior
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) hit a single to second base that allowed sophomore
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) to score. The North Carolina native then stole second which caused a throwing error by the catcher on the play to bring junior
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) home.
Tew was then brought home via a single from first-year
Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) to give the Vixens the 3-0 lead.
However, from the bottom of the first inning on it was all Quakers. The home team tallied two runs in the first to come within one run before taking a 5-3 lead after the conclusion of the second.
Guilford then tacked on six more runs in the following three innings to conclude the game early with the score at 11-3.
Sawyers got the start in the circle for Sweet Briar and contested four innings while junior
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) recorded the final two outs.
At the plate, Sawyers went two-for-three while Martin was hit by a pitch twice.
Game Two
The Vixens also tallied the first run of game two as first-year
Grace Rokos (Jacksonville, N.C.) crossed home plate on a ground out from sophomore
Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) in the top of the second inning.
The Quakers answered back in the third to tie the game up and then took the lead off a sacrifice bunt in the fourth.
In the sixth inning of action, a bunt from Sawyers allowed Jamerson to score and give both teams two runs.
With the game tied at two after the seventh, we went to extra innings to decide the winner.
Guilford's sacrifice fly in the eighth gave the home team the 3-2 victory.
Junior
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) pitched a complete game and recorded two strikeouts.
Rokos was two-for-two at the plate while Martin added another hit by pitch to her tally.
