Softball Brings Lynchburg to Extras

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (15-17, 2-12 ODAC) faced off against the University of Lynchburg Hornets (18-10, 9-5 ODAC) in today's senior day doubleheader.

The Vixens brought the Hornets to extra innings in game one, falling by a score of 7-4 in eight innings, before dropping game two, 5-1.

Game One
Sweet Briar got the scoring started in today's action with a three run third inning.

A hit from first-year Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) scored sophomore Jordan Martin while errors from Lynchburg on Ambyre Taylor's (Arrington, Va.) hit on the following play brought home Sawyers and junior Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.).

However, a run in the fourth and two in the sixth inning by the Hornets tied the game up at three. After a scoreless seventh, the game went into extra innings.

Lynchburg took advantage of the extra action by scoring four runs in the top of the eighth.

Sweet Briar's lone eighth-inning run came from Taylor's right-field single which scored Jamerson.

Taylor pitched a complete game and struck out four through the eight innings of action.

At the plate, Taylor totaled two of the Vixens' three RBIs while Jamerson accounted for half of the team's runs.

Game Two
Lynchburg kept the bats hot in game two, totaling four runs right out of the gate in the first inning before tacking on an additional run in the third to go up 5-0.

Sweet Briar's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh off a hit from sophomore Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) which scored junior Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.).

Sawyers got the start in the circle with juniors Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) and Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) also seeing action in the game. O'Quinn earned two strike outs while Smith totaled one.

Jamerson went two-for-three at the plate while senior Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) was one-for-two.
