Softball Draws Even with Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (16-18, 3-13 ODAC) wrapped up the week with an evening doubleheader at the Ferrum College Panthers (12-16, 8-6 ODAC).

The Vixens took the eight-inning game one, 8-6, before dropping the closely contested second game of the evening, 2-1.

Game One
Sweet Briar struck first in game one as junior Kaylie Hudson's (Lynchburg, Va.) first home run of the season put the team up 1-0.

Another run was tacked on in the fourth inning as first-year Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) singled up the middle of the field to score fellow first-year Emily Cottingham (Chesterfield, Va.).

However, Ferrum brought the lead back down to one after scoring its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth before taking a 6-2 lead following the conclusion of a five-run fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth, first-year Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va.) earned her first career RBI with a right-field single to bring the score to 6-3.

A single from junior Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) brought the Vixens to within two runs and a throwing error on her steal of second base in the following play allowed for Schmidt to score and set the score at 6-5.

Sweet Briar tied the game up in the seventh inning off a single from Hudson sent sophomore Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) home.

Sophomore Emma Staton's (Buckingham, Va.) infield single in the extra eighth inning would prove to be the game-winning RBI and a single from Martin which scored junior Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) gave the Vixens the 8-6 victory.

Sophomore Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) got the start in the circle and struck out five through 4.2 innings of action. Junior Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) only allowed one hit in her 3.1 innings of work to earn the victory.

Game Two
Game two of the evening was a lower scoring affair. Ferrum got on the board first with a run in the second inning before the Vixens answered back with a run in the top of the fourth.

Purvis recorded her second RBI of the day with her single scoring Hudson to tie the game up.

The Panthers immediately answered back with a run to bring the score 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth and with the rest of the innings scoreless, the game concluded with the home team taking the win.

Purvis pitched 3.1 innings in her first April outing. Smith came into the game in relief and struck out three of the 11 batters she faced through 2.2 innings of action.

At the plate, Purvis was two-for-two while fellow first-year Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) recorded a hit in her one at-bat as a pinch hitter.

Highlights
  • Hudson's home run is the fourth by a Sweet Briar batter this season.
  • Sawyers recorded her ninth double of the season in game two, the most on the team and sixth-most in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
