Softball Breaks Even with Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (15-15, 2-10 ODAC) split today's doubleheader at the Shenandoah University Hornets (11-15, 5-7 ODAC), falling in game one 11-1 before bouncing back with a 1-0 victory in game two.

Game One

Shenandoah got today's scoring started with a two-run bottom of the second.

The Vixens answered back with a run of their own in the top of the third off a double from first-year Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) which scored junior Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.).

However, the scoring would be all Hornets from the bottom of the third inning on with nine runs tacked on by the home team to take the 11-1 victory following the conclusion of the fifth inning.

Sophomore Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) got the start in the circle for Sweet Briar with juniors Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) and Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) also seeing action.

At the plate, Sawyers was two-for-three with one RBI off her double while first-year shortstop Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va.) was one-for-one.

Game Two

The lone run for either team in game two came at the top of the first inning.

Junior Kaylie Hudson's (Lynchburg, Va.) single up the middle of the field scored sophomore Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.).

With no other runs scored in the game, the Vixens came away with the 1-0 victory.

Sawyer struck out three on her way to the second zero-run complete game of her career.

Martin was two-for-two at the plate with one run scored.

Highlights
  • After scoring her 33rd run of the season, Martin now accounts for 20% of all the runs scored by Sweet Briar so far this year.
  • Today's second game of action is the fourth so far this season where Sawyers has not given up any runs in at least a single inning in the circle.
