SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (0-1, 0-0 ODAC) opened up the 2025 season at home against the Wilson College Phoenix (1-0, 0-0 UEC), falling by a score of 0-4.
In the first quarter, Sweet Briar generated some early chances, earning two penalty corners. However, shots by senior
Carlina Christy (Denver, Pa.) and junior
Emmi Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) went wide or were blocked. Sophomore goalkeeper
Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) stood tall early, stopping attempts from the Phoenix, but Wilson eventually broke through at 14:07 when an unassisted goal put them up 1-0.
The second quarter saw Hart make more saves, but Wilson again capitalized, this time at the 17:41 mark. Sweet Briar's best chance of the period came when junior
Gigi Hutman (Bordentown, N.J.) fired wide. The Vixens kept the deficit manageable heading into halftime, trailing just 2-0.
In the third quarter, Sweet Briar's defensive pressure was evident. Hart made several crucial stops, including a save on a penalty stroke by at 31:20, but late in the period, a goal from Wilson at 44:34 made it 3-0. The Vixens faced a series of corners but hung tough throughout the frame.
The fourth quarter mirrored earlier periods, with Hart remaining active, collecting another save, but the Vixens conceded a final tally at 53:45 when Wilson struck again. When the final whistle blew, Sweet Briar had managed five shots and three penalty corners for the game, but ultimately could not solve the Wilson defense, finishing the opener with a shutout loss.
