Volleyball Bested by Pitt-Bradford

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College volleyball team (0-8) was bested by the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Panthers (12-3, 0-0 AMCC) this evening, 3-0, falling by set scores of 25-5, 25-6 and 25-10.

The first set saw Sweet Briar accumulate five points while Pitt.-Bradford efficiently racked up 25, capitalizing on receiving woes and attacking errors. Despite a few scattered kills, the Vixens were unable to build momentum, and the set closed with a decisive lead for the visitors.

During the second set, Sweet Briar made some rotational adjustments but continued to face Pitt.-Bradford's relentless offense and service pressure. The Vixens increased their point total, posting six points. First-year Rachael Hunt (Willow Spring, N.C.) and junior Gracyn Wright (Rock Hill, S.C.) contributed with key attacks, and the team managed a handful of digs and blocks, yet unforced errors—including several on serve receive and attack—hampered any sustained momentum; however, Pitt.-Bradford again took the set 25-6.

The third set was Sweet Briar's most competitive, as the team found better rhythm defensively and offensively, totaling 10 points. The Vixens had some bright spots with contributions from junior Emily Roberts (Walkertown, N.C.), Hunt and Wright; defensive touches and blocks were more consistent, and the squad showed more side-out efficiency despite Pitt.-Bradford still holding the upper hand. Pitt.-Bradford finished the frame 25-10, sealing their three-set sweep.

Across all three sets, Sweet Briar's efforts were marked by flashes of strong individual play, particularly on defense and in transition.

Highlights
  • Seniors Stella Ball (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Clara Delattre (Long Lake, Minn.) recorded their first block assists while Roberts recorded the first two of her collegiate career.
  • Both Hunt and Wright led the team in digs, while Wright and sophomore Mila Mutabdzija (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) recorded one service ace each.
What's Next
The Vixens will see action against Stevenson and Penn State York in Owing Mills, Md., tomorrow, Sept. 27th.
