SALEM, Va. – The Sweet Briar College indoor track & field team saw more program records fall over the past two days of competition at the Finn Pincus Invite, hosted by Roanoke.
The meet kicked off with the 60-meter dash preliminaries, in which four Vixens competed. First- year
Tyasia Spencer (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the way with an 8.60 to finish 25th, while sophomore
Electra McPherson (Madison Heights, Va.) also secured a top- 30 finish with an 8.74.
First- years
Elena Fomin (Middlesex County, Va.) and
Violet Walsh (Chesterfield County, Va.) also competed in the event, recording times of 9.39 for Fomin and a personal- best 9.50 for Walsh.
Sweet Briar wrapped up day one with a new program record in the 4000-meter distance medley relay (DMR). The DMR team of junior
Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.), first- year
Azshalay Utley (Columbus, Ohio), junior
Amanda Costa (Watertown, N. Y.) and first- year
Elaina Sherline (Morehead City, N. C.) posted a time of 14:52.21.
The second day of action began with Viccora' s 16th- place finish in the 1-mile run with a time of 6:27.77.
Costa was the lone Vixen competitor in the 400-meter dash. She crossed the finish line at 1:13.60 to place 15th.
Both senior
Jaiana Gray (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore
Michaela Carr (Springfield, Va.) saw shot put action. Gray recorded a distance of 9.50 m, while Carr' s throw went 5.44 m.
Sherline recorded the best performance by a Sweet Briar athlete when she took first place in the 800-meter run, lowering her previous program- best benchmark. Sherline crossed the finish line first at 2:31.91, beating the times set by 14 other Division III and Division II competitors.
The Vixens' time in Roanoke concluded with the 200-meter dash. Spencer once again led the way for Sweet Briar, placing 19th with a time of 28.66. She was followed by Utley, who finished in 31.82. Walsh set her second personal best of the meet with a 32.63.
Highlights
- The previous DMR record was bested, lowering it from 15:14.
- Gray' s shot put mark today set a new indoor program record in the event.
- Sherline is the first Sweet Briar track & field athlete to place first in an event in program history.
