PENN LAIRD, Va. – The Sweet Briar College indoor track & field team turned in a strong all-around day at the Rockingham Collegiate Open, highlighted by a podium relay finish and several top-half individual results across the sprints, mid-distance and throws.
In the sprints, first-year
Tyasia Spencer (Fredericksburg, Va.) competed in the 60-meter dash prelims and finished with a 12th-place personal-best 8.40, and then came back to place eighth in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 1:07.40.
Fellow first-year
Violet Walsh (Chesterfield County, Va.) raced three times, clocking personal-best times of 9.29 in the 60m, 31.76 in the 200m and also contributing as part of the team's sprint corps.
Also competing in the 200-meter dash, first-years
Azshalay Utley (Columbus, Ohio) (30.57),
Elaina Sherline (Morehead City, N.C.) (31.29). Utley set a new PR in the event while Sherline saw action at the distance for the first time in her collegiate career.
Sherline then delivered one of the team's best individual results on the track, placing fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:26.75 to finish just behind the winner and among a packed top group. Junior
Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.) represented
Sweet Briar in the mile, placing 29th in 6:42.38 in a deep field that featured over 30 finishers.
The Vixens also produced a standout relay performance, as the 4x400-meter team of Utley, junior
Amanda Costa (Watertown, N.Y.), Viccora, and Sherline raced to third place in 4:50.03, finishing behind only Southern Virginia and Marymount.
In the throws, senior
Jaiana Gray (Chicago, Ill.) led the way with a strong 12th-place finish in the shot put with a personal-best mark at 9.62 meters and added a 23rd-place mark of 6.92 meters in the weight throw.
Sophomore
Michaela Carr (Springfield, Va.) completed the throws lineup, placing 25th in the shot put at 5.12 meters and 25th in the weight throw at 4.45 meters as she continues to develop in both events.
Highlights
- Spencer bested her previously-set program records in the 60-meter dash and 400-meter dash.
- Sherline improved on the program record in the 800-meter run.
- Gray topped her previously set program record of 9.51m in the shot put.

The Vixens will head to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships, Feb. 28th – March 1st.
