SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (1-5, 1-2 ODAC) battled to the final court but came up just short in a 4–3 setback at the Guilford College Quakers (6-3, 3-1 ODAC) on Saturday afternoon at McMichael Courts in Greensboro, N.C.
After dropping all three doubles positions and the early 1–0 match deficit that came with it, the Vixens responded with three strong singles victories to push the Quakers to the brink before the hosts clinched.
In singles, senior
Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) put Sweet Briar on the board with a three-set comeback on court two, rallying from a first-set loss to defeat Ashley Belnap 4–6, 6–2, 10–5. Junior
Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) followed with a dominant straight-set win at No. 3, rolling past Chandler Sizemore 6–1, 6–1 to draw Sweet Briar closer. Sophomore
Ari Venturi (Richmond, Va.) then added another convincing result at No. 5, earning a 6–3, 6–3 victory over Amy Soto Salgado to give the Vixens their third singles point of the day.
At the top of the lineup, senior
Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) battled but fell 6–4, 6–2 to Carolina Dirk at No. 1 singles, while fellow seniors
Atty Bestwick (Durham, N.C.) dropped a 6–0, 6–1 decision at No. 4 to McKenna Merritt and
Megan Vess (Goodview, Va.) fell 6–0, 6–0 at No. 6 to Brooke Tsuei as Guilford secured the team win.
