LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College outdoor track & field team opened up the 2026 season and competed with strong spirit across both track and field events, seeing several athletes deliver solid performances yesterday and today.
In the sprints, first-year
Tyasia Spencer (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the way with a time of 13.40 seconds in the 100m prelims, placing 29th, and returned for the 200m to finish in 27.76 for another 29th-place showing. Fellow first-year
Azshalay Utley (Columbus, Ohio) clocked 14.26 in the 100m and 30.17 in the 200m.
On the distance side, first-year standout
Elaina Sherline (Morehead City, N.C.) continued her strong debut season, placing 17th in the 800m with a time of 2:27.75 and earning a top-five finish in the 1500m at 5:21.00. Junior
Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.) added consistency for the Vixens, running 2:41.76 in the 800m and 5:45.41 in the 1500m.
Sweet Briar also had a solid showing in the field events. Senior
Jaiana Gray (Chicago, Ill.) placed 32nd in the hammer throw with a mark of 20.79 meters (68-02) and added a throw of 8.99 meters (29-06.00) in the shot put to take 28th. Sophomore
Michaela Carr (Springfield, Va.) threw 14.30 meters (46-11) in the hammer and 5.14 meters (16-10.50) in the shot put.
Sophomore
Karissa Boyce (Red Rock, Texas) represented the team in the javelin, finishing 24th with a best throw of 12.68 meters (41-07).
In the pole vault, sophomore first-year
Elena Fomin (Middlesex County, Va.) cleared 2.15 meters (7-00.50) to place 10th overall.
Highlights
- Spencer set new program records in both the 100m and the 200m.
- Sherline now sits atop the record books in the 800m and the 1500m.
- Fomin is the first Vixen to record a height in the outdoor pole vault.
