SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College lacrosse team (0-5, 0-1 ODAC) dropped a 19–1 decision to the Wilkes University Colonels (4-0, 0-0 Landmark) on Wednesday evening at Meyer Field.
Wilkes built an early cushion in the first quarter, with Sweet Briar forced to defend from the opening draw as sophomore goalie
Geneva Seitz (Havre de Grace, Md.) turned away multiple free-position chances to keep the game within reach despite a 7–0 deficit after 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Vixens started to generate more possession, with first-year
Caitlin Weaver (Wellford, S.C.) sparking the transition game by collecting ground balls in the defensive half while Seitz continued to anchor the back line with five first-quarter saves and two more in the second to limit Wilkes to four goals in the frame. Sweet Briar's best early look came midway through the period when first-year
Lyndsay Davis (Mocksville, N.C.) earned a free-position attempt, forcing the Wilkes keeper into a save that underscored the Vixens' persistence in the attacking end.
The third quarter saw Sweet Briar continue to scrap on the draw circle, with Davis once again central to the effort as the Vixens battled for possession against a Wilkes side that maintained pressure and extended its lead. Seitz remained busy in goal, adding to her ground ball total and repeatedly breaking up clear attempts from Wilkes to give her teammates opportunities to reset offensively. Defensively,
Geneva Seitz, Weaver, senior
Liz Carr (Charlottesville, Va.) and sophomores
Larkin Shire (Caroline County, Va.) and
Elise Palazzo (Allentown, Pa.) and the back line forced Wilkes to work deep into the shot clock on several possessions, with Sweet Briar holding Wilkes to five goals in the period despite the visitors' 6–0 advantage in shots.
Sweet Briar's breakthrough came in the fourth quarter, when Davis turned her two-way work into the Vixens' lone goal of the evening. After causing a turnover and collecting a ground ball, Davis drew a free-position opportunity with just over two minutes remaining and converted unassisted to put Sweet Briar on the board at 19–1. The Vixens continued to compete to the final horn, with Seitz recording another save in the closing minutes and adding to her team-high 10 ground balls as Sweet Briar closed the game with its most productive period in terms of ground balls and overall energy.
Highlights
- Davis is now tied for the team lead with three goals.
