SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College lacrosse team (0-8, 0-2 ODAC) fell 21-0 to the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins (6-5, 1-2 ODAC) on April 1st at Meyer Field, but the box score still showed several competitive moments from the home side on defense and in possession play.
Virginia Wesleyan controlled the game from the opening draw, yet Sweet Briar's best stretches came in the first half when sophomore goalkeeper
Geneva Seitz (Havre de Grace, Md.) repeatedly kept the score from growing even faster with a busy effort in goal.
Virginia Wesleyan struck first at 14:27 of the opening quarter, and from there the pace of the game became one-way as the visitors scored 10 times in the first period and built a 10-0 lead. Sweet Briar had trouble advancing the ball early, but first-year
Lyndsay Davis (Mocksville, N.C.) helped provide some resistance in the midfield, while fellow first-year
Caitlin Weaver (Wellford, S.C.) was active in creating pressure with caused turnovers and ground-ball work. The Vixens added six more in the second quarter, and Sweet Briar's defense was pushed to the limit, especially when Seitz turned aside shot after shot while the team tried to survive long defensive stretches.
The third quarter followed the same script, with Virginia Wesleyan adding five more goals to close out the 21-0 final. Sweet Briar continued to battle defensively, and Weaver again appeared in the play-by-play with a caused turnover and a ground-ball pickup, while Seitz kept working under constant pressure until the final horn. The game ended with Sweet Briar still scoreless, but the defensive effort and the play of its goalie kept the result from becoming even more lopsided.
Highlights
- Davis led Sweet Briar with five draw controls and also added one ground ball.
- Weaver had two ground balls and four caused turnovers
