VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (2-9, 1-6 ODAC) dropped a 5-2 match at the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins (5-9, 4-2 ODAC) on April 11th at Everett Tennis Center.
Still, the box score showed a strong effort in doubles and two singles wins, keeping the match competitive. Sweet Briar's points came from singles victories at No. 1 and at No. 3.
In doubles, seniors
Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) and
Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) delivered the top-line win for Sweet Briar, edging Flink/Hafermann 7-5 at No. 1.
Singles brought Sweet Briar's other two points at the hands of Guilarte and junior
Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.). Guilarte took down Tuva Flink, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1, while Minton outlasted Mikisha Thomas 6-1, 7-6 (7-0) at No. 3.
Bovard, sophomore
Ari Venturi (Richmond, Va.) and Vess all took games against their opponents at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Highlights
- Minton extends her singles win streak to three while closing out her collegiate career undefeated against the Marlins.
- Guilarte also now holds a three-match win streak in singles play.
