HIGH POINT, N.C. / Westminster, Md. – The Sweet Briar College outdoor track and field team split the squad today with track athletes seeing action at the VertKlasse Invitational at High Point University and the field athletes taking on the Green Terror Invite, hosted by McDaniel College.
VertKlasse Invitational
Action kicked off early in the Tar Heel State with first-year
Elaina Sherline (Morehead City, N.C.) and junior
Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.) competing in the 800m. Sherline placed 27th with a time of 2:23.19, while Viccora posted a 2:43.08 in her heat.
First-year
Tyasia Spencer (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the way for the Vixens in the 100m after placing 50th with a time of 13.13. Fellow first-year
Azshalay Utley (Columbus, Ohio) followed closely behind her with a time of 13.91
Sherline and Viccora also represented Sweet Briar in 400m and posted times of 1:05.53 and 1:09.94, respectively.
Spencer set a new personal-best time in the 200m after crossing the finish line at the 27.21 mark and Utley completed the race in 29.24 for a personal-best of her own.
Green Terror Invite
The field athletes turned in a well-rounded performance across the field events, with several Vixens earning key points and strong finishes in the Old Line State.
Senior
Jaiana Gray (Chicago, Ill.) led the way for Sweet Briar, finishing fourth in the shot put with a throw of 9.27 meters (30 feet, 5 inches) to secure five team points, and placing sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 27.58 meters (90 feet, 6 inches) to add three more. Gray's consistency across multiple events helped set the tone for the team's success.
Sophomore
Michaela Carr (Springfield, Va.) also competed in the throws, taking ninth in the hammer throw with a mark of 14.01 meters (45 feet, 11 inches) and adding a 12th-place performance in the shot put at 5.72 meters (18 feet, 9.25 inches). Fellow sophomore
Karissa Boyce (Red Rock, Texas) notched two top-12 finishes of her own, placing eighth in the javelin with a throw of 11.22 meters (36 feet, 9 inches) to earn one point, and twelfth in the discus with a 15.91-meter (52 feet, 2 inches) effort.
In the pole vault, first-year
Elena Fomin (Middlesex County, Va.) impressed, clearing 2.30 meters for a new program record (7 feet, 6.5 inches) to claim seventh place and add two points for the Vixens.
Highlights
- Sherline recorded new program records in the 800m and 400m, while Spencer set ones in the 100m and 200m.
- Utley topped her previous personal-best time in the 100m.
- Gray set new program records in the shot put and hammer throw, while Carr recorded a season-best shot put distance.
